What You’ll Need

Before you start, gather these supplies:

Step-by-Step Guide to Staining Butcher Block

  1. Sand the Countertops
If your butcher block is new, you can skip heavy sanding. It is important for the surface to receive a proper sanding to ensure a professional and even finish. For older or pre-finished wood, start with 80-grit sandpaper to remove any old finishes, we recommend a final sanding of 100-150 grit abrasive. Always sand in the direction of the wood grain.

  2. Clean the Wood
Vacuum thoroughly to remove any dust and then clean the wood. If you are using Rubio Monocoat 2C Oil, use Rubio Monocoat Raw Wood Cleaner. If you are finishing your butcher block with Ciranova Worktop Oil, use Ciranova Intensive Cleaner. This step ensures that the surface is prepped and ensures an even finish. Wait until the wood is completely dry before moving to the next step.

  3. Fill Cracks or Seams (If Needed)
If you have areas that need to be filled, we recommend using Rubio Monocoat Woodfiller Quick in a color that is closest to your final finished color.
  4. Apply the Stain
Choose a food-safe stain like Rubio Monocoat 2C Oil, which only requires one coat and doubles as a sealant. Or Ciranova Worktop Oil if you want to keep the natural wood color. Test the stain on a small, hidden section first to ensure you like the color. Apply the stain with a foam brush, working in long strokes parallel to the wood grain. Let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe off excess with a clean rag.

  5. Seal the Countertops (If Necessary)
If you’re not using a stain that seals, apply a food-safe sealer like tung oil. This step protects the wood and enhances its durability. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for drying times and additional coats.

FAQs About Staining Butcher Block

Staining is a personal preference. If you want a darker or custom look, staining is a great option. Otherwise, you can keep the natural color and simply seal the wood.

What’s the Best Stain for Butcher Block?

We recommend using Rubio Monocoat 2C Oil if you are wanting to add color and protection because it’s food-safe, available in many colors, and requires just one coat. We also recommend Ciranova WorktopOil, which comes in a clear matte or satin finish. This product is used for both protection and maintenance in one product and is food safe. Other options include tung oil or traditional water- or oil-based stains.

Can Butcher Block Countertops Get Wet?

Using a finish that creates a water-resistant surface, such as Ciranova’s Worktop Oil and Rubio Monocoat’s 2C Oil will help to prevent water from absorbing into the wood pores and help to protect them from damage that could come from being exposed to water. Butcher block countertops are usually used in the kitchen, and let's face it, they are bound to be exposed to water, so choosing the right finish, is the best way to prevent damage. Never leave standing water on your butcher block. Wipe up any spills as soon as possible.
