What is a Reactive Stain?
Reactive stains are formulated with dyes and raw materials that interact with the wood’s natural tannins, producing an aged, organic look. While they work exceptionally well on oak, they also deliver striking results on other wood species.
Application Tips:
- After the reaction time, smooth the surface with a buffing pad to "pop" the grain and remove excess stain.
- Make the surface dust-free before applying a protective finish from the Ciranova® product line like Hardwaxoil Magic or Un1co - One Coat Oil.
- For industrial applications, spray-on waterborne finishes can be used for optimal results.
Preparation
- Remove all old finish coats completely.
- Remove all dust and other dirt before applying Reactive Stain.
Can be used on sanded, planed, and brushed wood.
Application
* Pre-wetting the wood helps to reduce the risk of overlapping.
- Stir and shake well before and during use.
- Apply reactive stain with a brush, squirt bottle or spray gun. Apply evenly in the direction of the wood fiber and even out afterward.
- Smooth with a brush or a mop.
- Reactive stain can “pop” the grain, so it is recommended that you smooth the surface after the full reaction time with a buffing pad.
- Remove all dust and finish with an oil finish from the Ciranova® product line.
Caution
This is a reactive stain, make sure that the stain is applied evenly. Reaction time will vary due to surrounding temperature, humidity and ventilation.
Finishing
- Reactive stain can "pop" the grain, so we recommend that you buff out or smooth the surface after the full reaction time with a buffing pad.
- Remove all dust from the surface.
- Finish with an oil or waterborne finish.
Protecting Your Finish
Ciranova Reactive Stain creates the color, but it must be protected with a finishing product. Our recommended finish, Hardwaxoil Magic, offers durability and enhances the final look.
You can use a waterborne finish if it is sprayed on, which may be applied by professionals or for industrial applications. Waterborne finishes, such as varnishes, cannot be rolled or brushed on, because it can partly dissolve the color.
