How to Neutralize Red Tones in Wood
Posted by SPECIAL HARDWOOD

Why Does Wood Have Red Tones?
Wood species like red oak naturally have warm undertones, often appearing reddish or pinkish. While beautiful, these tones may not always match the aesthetic you want for your space. If you’re looking for a more neutral or cooler wood tone, you’ll need a product designed to counteract those red hues.
What Is Pink Blocker?
Pink Blocker is a pre-treatment, water-based reactive stain. It helps to neutralize the red and pink tones in wood, making it ideal for homeowners and woodworkers who want a more natural or cool-toned look. It’s especially effective on red oak, but it can also be used on other wood species with varying results.

How to Neutralize Red Tones in Wood
If you want to reduce or remove red tones from wood, follow these steps using Ciranova Pink Blocker 2C:
Step 1: Prepare the Wood Surface
- Ensure the wood is completely clean and free of dust, old finishes, or dirt.
- Sand, plane, or brush the wood as needed for an even surface.
- Pre-wetting the wood can help minimize overlapping marks.
Step 2: Mix and Apply Pink Blocker
- Pink Blocker is a 2 component product. It comes with Part A and Part B that must be mixed in a 1:1 Ratio. Mix together Pink Blocker Clear and Pink Blocker Stain.
- Use a sprayer, roller, or brush to apply the solution evenly.
- Smooth out with a brush, T-bar, or mop to ensure an even application.

Step 3: Allow Full Reaction Time & Buff the Surface
- Leave to react on the surface for at least 6 hours
- Remove all dust before proceeding to the next step.
Step 4: Apply a Finish
- Pink Blocker is not a finish—it must be sealed with a protective product.
- Apply a finishing product to protect the wood. You can finish the surface with a waterborne finish, Hardwaxoil or UV-oil from the Ciranova’s finishing collection to protect the wood and achieve the final desired look.
Can You Use Pink Blocker on Other Wood Species?
Yes! While Pink Blocker is especially effective on red oak, it can also be used on other types of wood to help neutralize red or pink tones. However, the results may vary depending on the species, so it's always a good idea to test on a small area first.
Can You Use Pink Blocker Pre-Treatment and Finish the Wood With Other Brands of Finishing Oil?
Ciranova recommends finishing wood that has been pretreated with Pink Blocker with one of the Ciranova Finishing Products. Results cannot be guaranteed and may vary when using other product lines of finishing products.
