Deck Maintenance Guide for Fall

As the long, hot days of summer transition into the cozy, cooler days of fall, it's the perfect time to ensure that your outdoor living space, especially your wooden deck, remains in tip-top shape for the upcoming season. Fall deck maintenance is crucial to prevent issues like wood rot, mold growth, and structural damage during the colder months. Learn more how to maintain a wood deck and get to know fall deck ideas. We have put together a comprehensive checklist of tasks that every homeowner should complete to prepare their decks for fall:

1. Clean Thoroughly

Begin by sweeping away leaves, debris, and dirt. Use a deck brush and a mild detergent, such as Rubio Monocoat Exterior Soap to scrub away any stains, mold, or mildew, while nourishing the wood.  Rinse thoroughly and leave the wood to dry.

2. Inspect Hardware and Check for Damage

Carefully examine the deck's surface, railings, and stairs for loose or damaged boards, nails, or screws. Replace or repair any issues that you find to ensure safety and will make your deck last longer. Tighten any loose bolts and screws on railings, stairs, and furniture. Lubricate hinges and locks to prevent rust.

3. Clear Gutters and Downspouts

Ensure that any gutters and downspouts are clear of debris.  This will help to prevent water buildup, which can lead to moss and mildew build up and eventually can lead to the rotting of your wooden surfaces.

4. Trim Overhanging Trees

Trim any branches and foliage that hang over the deck to minimize the accumulation of leaves and moisture, which can lead to mildew and decay.

5. Clean and Seal Grill Area

If you have a grill on your deck, clean it thoroughly and cover it to protect it from the elements.

6. Prevent Ice Damage

In regions with freezing temperatures, consider placing mats or rugs near entrances to prevent ice and snow from accumulating on the deck.

7. Inspect Lighting

Ensure that outdoor lighting fixtures are in working order, providing both safety and ambiance during the longer fall evenings.

8. Drain Water Features

If you have a pond or fountain on or near your deck, drain and winterize it to prevent damage from freezing.
