Caring For Your Oiled Floor
Posted by SPECIAL HARDWOOD
Rubio Monocoat Oil is a natural, environmentally friendly yet extremely durable way to make custom wood flooring look its best, for as long as you want it to. Proper maintenance for this style of oil finish is simple, and if followed your floor will look as new, indefinitely. “Dry” maintenance (sweeping, vacuuming, etc.) is normal until such a time as you feel the floor needs a good cleaning to look better. Here a simple damp mopping with our special soap product will do the trick. If, after time, you feel the look of the floor needs a little boost use our Renew product, which can be easily applied, when/where needed, by any homeowner, their staff or a professional, if desired.
Unlike a topical urethane finish our maintenance is regular but never severe. There should never be a need for moving heavy furniture for a recoat or a messy re-sand. The only reason for a re-sand with our system would be if a color change is desired… CHOICE… not need!
Pets can offer a challenge to any floor covering. Accidents, left unattended, will eventually mar the look of your floor. With our system this may create a need for a professional to come in and topically repair the affected area. We can make the floor rebound to its original look as long as the wood itself has not been affected. The beauty of our system allows us to deal with only the area affected, not the whole floor as would be the case with a urethane topcoat system. Scratches are another “pet” issue. These, often, are unavoidable with any wood floor finish system. They are topically repairable with our oil system though. The whole floor need not be addressed, just the areas affected. Love and enjoy your pets but learn to put up with an occasional imposition. At least, with our system the “fixes” are easier to come by with less affect to the look of the floor.
Keep Your Floor Clean
Once your floor is finished with Rubio Monocoat oil you should allow a three-week cure period before cleaning with liquids. Keeping dirt and grit off a wood floor will greatly extend the life of any finish. You should place mats inside and outside all exterior doors and in front of sinks. Clean the floor often by sweeping or vacuuming with a soft brush attachment. Scuff marks can quickly be removed by rubbing the spot with a tennis ball.
When sweeping or vacuuming does not clean sufficiently, damp mopping with clean water is all right for a Rubio Monocoat oiled floor. Remember that wood and water do not mix, so damp mopping means your mop should not be “dripping wet” when cleaning a wood floor. Clean water will not always get your floor clean. At least 3 or 4 times a year you should damp mop with a soap solution.
Rubio Monocoat makes the following soap products to insure that your oiled floor is properly cleaned:
Rubio Monocoat Natural Soap is specially made to clean oiled floors. Natural soap mixes with water to a 40:1 cleaning solution, is a cleaner only and leaves no film. A liter of Natural Soap will make 16-20 gallons of cleaning solution.
Rubio Monocoat Surface Care Spray is premixed Natural Soap and water in a spray bottle. This is made for spot cleaning, but some like to use it for mopping their floors. To re-fill pour 1 Ounce of Natural Soap into the bottle and fill it with water or make your own by mixing the suggested amounts of Natural Soap and water into a 32 oz. or 750 Milliliter spray bottle.
Refresh The Oil Finish
10% of your floor will wear quicker than the other 90%. High traffic areas like the inside of entrance doors, hallways, and around kitchen cabinets can develop “dry” spots. As the finish wears away, the worn spots/areas will look drier than the surrounding area. As long as the color of the surface is not affected by wear, these “dry” spots can be refreshed individually whenever necessary with Rubio Monocoat Renew.
Renew is revitalizing treatment oil that absorbs into and restores the oil finish. It is very easy to apply. You simply wipe Refresh onto the dry/worn spot/area, leave it to react for a few minutes, and then wipe it dry. Using this product when necessary will extend the time span between complete rejuvenation and will increase the life of the finish.
Rejuvenate
Rubio Monocoat Oil is composed of natural ingredients, which are sustainable, renewable, and completely environmentally friendly. Since no artificial toxic hardeners are used to increase the durable life of the finish, periodic rejuvenation is necessary, usually between 2 and 6 years. The use of Rubio Monocoat Renew will extend the time period. When the application of Renew has no noticeable affect or the color of the finish has worn, rejuvenation should be carried out.
Rubio Monocoat Universal Maintenance Oil Pure is also available for rejuvenation with added sheen. The Universal Maintenance Oil will dry faster, about 6-7 hours.4 additional colors of Universal Maintenance Oil are available they are: Black, Brown, Grey and White.
